There are 10 individual Toyota cars that bear the brand’s iconic Gazoo Racing (GR) badges in South Africa.
The GR stable encompasses a wide range of shapes and sizes from hatchbacks to coupes, bakkies, and SUVs, some more equal than others.
It’s important to understand that the GR brand is divided into two main tiers, which determines their performance stats and, perhaps more importantly, their price tag.
The most sought-after models are the racing division’s original creations, which use the GR moniker as a prefix in their name.
In South Africa, this list includes the GR 86 and GR Supra coupes, as well as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla hot hatchbacks.
These units are designed from the ground up as performance cars, and feature a variety of track-themed additions such as powerful engines, responsive gearboxes, and specially-tuned suspension, steering and brakes.
Naturally, these models are very desirable but their impressive stats come at a substantial cost, as the most affordable option is the R809,600 GR 86.
There is another way to get a car bearing Toyota’s black, white, and red sports badges, however, which is where the GR-Sport entries come in.
These options are not true performance cars, but are typically sold as a range-topping version of their respective series, offering a substantial visual overhaul inspired by the Gazoo Racing team.
This treatment is currently afforded to most of Toyota’s popular mass-market vehicles in South Africa, including the Corolla Cross, Fortuner, and Hilux.
In the case of the Cross, the GR-Sport models benefit from stiffer suspension and tightened steering, while the Fortuner and Hilux go a step further with a small improvement in their engine output that raises the cap by 15kW and 50Nm.
It’s an appreciable upgrade, but it in no way makes the GR-Sport cars comparable to GR originals.
However, the upside of these units is that they are substantially cheaper, starting at R518,200 for the Corolla Cross.
