There are only eight crossovers and SUVs with four-wheel-drive (4WD) that still retail for less than R600,000 in South Africa.
The segment has gradually shifted upwards over the past few years owing to several factors, from inflation to new-generation models that have significantly improved on the vehicle’s design with a corresponding bump in price.
Most Adventure SUVs, such as the Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner, now fall into this bracket, with stickers that often hover around the R1-million mark.
There’s also a noticeable absence of entry-level 4x4s, as the Suzuki Jimny is the only vehicle of its kind that still costs less than R500,000.
Even then, the base three-door models now retail for at least R399,900, while the five-door version asks for R429,900.
The Renault Duster used to compete into this category, but the next-gen units that debuted this March only have a single 4WD derivative that sells for R549,999.
Besides the Jimny and the Duster, aspiring off-roaders can pick up the flagship version of the Suzuki Grand Vitara, which is the only model in the range with 4WD.
If you’re prepared to spend over R550,000, you can choose from one of four options – three of which are Chinese
This includes the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max, BAIC B40 Plus, and Haval H6, all of which feature rather powerful engines in addition to their wheel configurations.
The final option is the Mahindra Scorpio N, where you’ll need to pay at least R587,999 to pick up a 4WD model well-suited for treks into the unknown.
