171 cars per day – Suzuki is killing it in South Africa

Suzuki experienced a record-breaking financial year in South Africa, achieving excellent sales figures and impressive year-on-year growth.

The Japanese carmaker revealed that it sold a grand total of 62,750 cars during the 2024/2025 financial year, equating to roughly 171 units making their way off the showroom floor every day.

What’s more, the company improved its sales by 20.75% from the previous year, demonstrating its rapid growth in popularity with local consumers.

South Africa’s rising star

Suzuki first began operations in South Africa in 2008, but the brand really began to hit its stride in the late 2010s.

A study by Lightstone Auto previously found that Suzuki was one of the fastest-growing automakers in the country, which is shown in the graph below:

The dark green line that shoots up between 2019 and 2022 is Suzuki, illustrating just how quickly the company rose to the top of the charts.

It has grown so rapidly, in fact, that Suzuki now holds the title as South Africa’s second-best-selling auto brand behind Toyota.

In March 2025, the carmaker sold a respectable 5,284 new cars, cementing its position in second place ahead of Volkswagen for a third-consecutive month.

This success is primarily driven by Suzuki’s catalogue of affordable vehicles, which are clearly resonating with consumers at a time when the cost of living is a major concern.

The company’s top seller in March was the fourth-generation Swift hatchback with 1,608 purchases – enough to make it the nation’s fifth best-selling car overall behind the locally produced VW Polo Vivo and the bakkie trio of the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max.

Other Suzuki models that proved to be especially popular last month included the Fronx crossover with 1,052 sales, and the Ergita MPV with 749.

“March’s strong performance ends Suzuki Auto’s 2024/2025 financial year on a high with total sales reaching 62,750 vehicles,” said Henno Havenga, GM Auto Sale and Marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa.

“This number eclipses the company’s 2023/2024 financial year sales of 51,969 vehicles by 10,781 units and in doing so sets a new all-time record for the Shizuoka-based carmaker on South African soil.”

The manufacturer achieved multiple sales records over the course of the last year, including its best-ever dealer sales, its best fleet/government/rental sales, and its highest Swift sales to date.

“With our latest financial year officially wrapped up, we are now also able to confirm Suzuki Auto South Africa has experienced year-on-year sales growth of 20.75%,” said Havenga.

While the company anticipates that mounting pressures will dampen consumer spending over the coming months, it nonetheless hopes it will continue to grow its presence in South Africa thanks to its budget-conscious roster of vehicles.
