What it costs to drive from Joburg to Durban this Easter weekend

The Easter weekend is nearly upon us, and many Gauteng residents are no doubt making plans to take advantage of the four-day break to go on a short holiday to the beaches in KwaZulu-Natal.
You’ll need to budget accordingly, however, as anyone planning to head to Durban can expect to spend at least R1,930.60 on travel costs.
City to coast at R21 per litre
Using central Gauteng as a starting point, the route down to Durban is approximately 584km long and will take around six hours.
For reference, petrol 95 is currently selling for R21.62 per litre at inland rates, based on the latest fuel price adjustments that took place this April.
We can use then this information to calculate the cost of the drive down to the coast, based on a car’s fuel efficiency.
Efficiency | Fuel needed | One-way trip | Return trip |
5.0l/100km | 29.20 litres | R631.30 | R1,262.60 |
6.0l/100km | 35.04 litres | R757.56 | R1,515.13 |
7.0l/100km | 40.88 litres | R883.83 | R1,767.65 |
8.0l/100km | 46.72 litres | R1,010.09 | R2,020.17 |
9.0l/100km | 52.56 litres | R1,136.35 | R2,272.70 |
10.0l/100km | 58.40 litres | R1,262.61 | R2,525.22 |
11.0l/100km | 64.24 litres | R1,388.87 | R2,777.74 |
12.0l/100km | 70.08 litres | R1,515.13 | R3,030.26 |
13.0l/100km | 75.92 litres | R1,641.39 | R3,282.78 |
Of course, petrol is not the only expense we need to take into account, as there are five toll gates on the road to Durban.
These are up-to-date fees for each of the toll booths following the latest adjustments in March 2025:
- Mooi – R67
- Wilge – R90
- Tugela – R96
- De Hoek – R65
- Marian Hill – R16
Altogether, these checkpoints will add another R334 to your holiday bill.
Combing the fuel and toll fees then shows that motorists will have to spend a minimum of R965.30 to get from Joburg to Durban, provided they have a fuel-efficient car.
On the other hand, anyone who drives a particularly thirsty model will need to fork out around R1,975.39 to make the journey.
Bear in mind this is only for the drive to Durban, which means we need to double these figures to get the total cost for a return trip.
In other words, it will cost anywhere from R1,930.60 to R3,950.78 to drive to the coast and back this Easter weekend.
