
April was a great month for new-car registrations in South Africa, with a whopping 42,401 purchases being made in total.
Few will be surprised to learn that the Toyota Hilux accounted for the bulk of these sales, bringing in a solid 2,780 buyers.
In second was the Suzuki Swift, which has become a regular top-three contender, sealing the deal with 2,053 units sold.
Third was awarded to the Ford Ranger which brought in 1,728 customers, after which came the Toyota Corolla Cross with 1,584.
The Hyundai Grand i10 claimed the fifth spot owing to its 1,425 transactions, while the VW Polo Vivo landed sixth with its 1,366.
Looking at the seventh position, this was taken by the Suzuki Fronx thanks to 1,186 buyers willing to spend their hard-earned cash on the popular crossover.
The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro then grabbed eighth with 1,133 units sold, with the Isuzu D-Max closely in tow at 1,108 sales.
The final model to make it into the top 10 was none other than the Haval Jolion, gaining a respectable 973 new owners.
Shifting attention to the best of the rest, the Toyota Starlet hatch and its crossover sibling the Starlet Cross drove away with 11th and 12th, respectively.
The Starlet reported 905 purchases during the month of April, while the Cross did 834.
Kia’s Sonet stood in the 13th spot with 812 sales, whereas the Suzuki Ertiga came 14th with 778 and the VW Polo 15th with 768.
The last bakkie to climb into the top 20 was the Mahindra Pik Up, which soared to the 16th position with 654 examples moved.
Not too far behind, the Toyota Fortuner scooped up 17th courtesy of its 606 registrations.
The final three models to earn recognition was the Omoda C5 in 18th, Toyota Hiace in 19th, and Toyota Urban Cruiser in 20th, which saw 588, 571, and 539 sales, respectively.
In total, the top 20 best-selling cars from April garnered 22,391 purchases, accounting for 53% of all new cars sold in the country.
