You should replace this car part at least once a year in South Africa

Windscreen wipers should be replaced once every six to 12 months in South Africa, or whenever they don’t work optimally anymore.
The country’s often hot and arid climate means rubber that is exposed to the sun deteriorates quickly. As such, windscreen wipers tend to not have the longest lifespans in our temperatures.
Replacing these components has therefore become a vital part of the car ownership experience.
The primary function of windshield wipers is to maintain a clear view of the road in rain, mist, and dust storms.
Over time, wiper blades wear out due to exposure to harsh sunlight, dirt, and general wear and tear.
“Old or damaged wipers can leave streaks and smudges that reduce visibility, putting you, your passengers, and other road users at risk,” said King Price insurance.
“In a country where the weather can go from sunny to stormy in the blink of an eye, having properly functioning wipers is non-negotiable.”
Moreover, fresher wipers can prevent unnecessary windshield damage.
If the rubber is cracked or peeling, the metal or plastic underneath could scratch your windshield every time you use them.
These scratches can worsen over time, leading to expensive repairs or even a full windshield replacement.
“Poor visibility increases the risk of accidents, especially when driving at night or in bad weather,” said King Price.
“Regularly replacing your wipers ensures you have a consistently clear view of the road, reducing the chances of misjudging distances or missing hazards.”
When you should replace your windshield wipers
As a precaution, King Price recommends you replace your wipers every six to 12 months.
The timing may vary depending on if you notice one of the following:
- Squeaking noises when they operate
- Skipping or juddering across the glass
- Streaking or smudging on your windshield
- Visible damage like cracked or peeling rubber
- Reduced effectiveness in clearing rain, mist, or dirt
You can also extend the lifespan of these important parts by regularly cleaning your windshield, wiping the wiper blades with a damp cloth, and lifting the wipers when parked in direct sunlight.
Also, always make sure they are lubricated when using them. Dry-wiping causes damage both ways – to the glass and the wiper.
“Compared to other car maintenance costs, replacing windshield wipers is 1 of the most affordable yet impactful things you can do,” concluded King Price.
“Think of it as a small investment that pays off in safer driving and potential savings on costly windshield repairs.”
