Opel has confirmed that the next-gen Grandland SUV will arrive in South Africa less than a month from now in July 2025.
The Grandland is one of several products the European carmaker has lined up for our market this year, alongside the Frontera crossover and the limited-run Corsa Irmscher Edition.
The incoming SUV is set to take its place as the flagship of Opel’s local roster when it touches down next month, showcasing a new platform with the brand’s latest technology and features.
As Opel is one of the many carmakers under the Stellantis umbrella, the new Grandland is built on the Stellantis STLA Medium BEV-native platform, which was designed with electric powertrains in mind.
That’s not to say the new model will exclusively be sold as a fully-electric vehicle, as the Grandland is available with two hybrid engines in other markets.
The company has yet to disclose which options will be brought to South Africa but, as a reference, Europe has access to a 48V mild hybrid with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 96kW and 230Nm.
There’s also a more expensive plug-in hybrid model, which features a larger 1.6-litre turbo-petrol plant paired with two electric motors.
The e-motors are powered by a 17.9kWh battery that allows for 87km of electric driving, and the plug-in hybrid has a combined output of 221kW.
The mild hybrid is a safe bet for South Africa, given that the technology is comparatively cheap and there are several options on the market now.
The plug-in hybrid, on the other hand, is likely to be much more expensive, which may have affected its prospects for a local introduction.
Design

As for the rest of the package, the new platform means the Grandland has grown 173mm in length to 4,650mm, 64mm in width to 1,905mm, and 19mm in height to 1,660mm.
It features new suspension with frequency-selective damping, which can adapt to the road surface to improve comfort.
At the front, you’ll find the brand’s signature “Blitz” logo is now illuminated and flanked by slim LED daytime running lights and headlights.
Depending on the model, adaptive Matrix headlights are available, and the SUV also comes with visual details like a two-tone black roof, flared wheel arches, and alloy wheels measuring up to 20 inches in diameter.
The interior sports a new 16-inch infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster, as well as a heads-up display and “Intelli-Seats” that are designed to minimize pressure on a person’s tailbone.
Other equipment includes automatic cruise control with stop & go, intelligent speed adaptation, extended traffic sign recognition, and in-crash braking – which automatically applies brakes in case of an accident thus helping to avoid a secondary collision.
The Grandland’s full spec sheet, model lineup and pricing will be revealed closer to its launch in July 2025.
