Best-selling cars in South Africa in 2025 – So far

We may only be halfway through 2025, but South Africa’s automakers have already managed to rack up incredible sales figures.

Within the first six months of the year, the local auto sphere sold an impressive 278,911 units, marking a 13.6% year-on-year improvement from the same period in 2024.

Of course, some cars were more popular than others with sales reaching thousands of units per month.

Unsurprisingly, the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger at topping the sales charts at the moment with 16,526 and 12,398 units, respectively.

Naturally, this means they were the top performers in our bakkies list, but they proved to be so popular that they also took the top two spots in the general sales chart.

The first passenger car to feature on the list is the Suzuki Swift in third place, which moved 11,948 units between January and June 2025.

This was followed by another affordable hatchback – the VW Polo Vivo – which saw 11,310 purchases.

Another bakkie then took fifth place, namely the Isuzu D-Max with its 9,846 sales.

Households looking for a family car evidently gravitated towards the Toyota Corolla Cross, which came sixth with 9,576 units.

This was followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 and Toyota Starlet with 7,836 and 7,330 units, landing them the seventh and eighth spots.

A Chinese car also made it into the top 10 in the form of the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro with 7,297 examples, putting it ahead of the Suzuki Fronx in 10th with 6,463 units.

Looking at the top 15, we have another Chinese entry with the Haval Jolion in 11th place, followed by the Toyota Starlet Cross in 12th.

Toyota is the only brand to feature on the list four times, illustrating the brand’s sway over local consumers.

The Mahindra Pik Up snuck in as the fourth bakkie on the sales chart, and the Kia Sonet and VW Polo came 14th and 15th, respectively.
