Most affordable double cab bakkie from every car brand in South Africa
You’ll need to spend a bare minimum of R359,900 to purchase a double cab bakkie in South Africa.
Bakkies continue to play a major role in our automotive landscape, loved by commercial ventures and private individuals in equal measure.
For households, the five-seater double cab is almost always the way to go, providing a larger cabin and additional seating for the whole family.
Unfortunately, double-cab prices have rapidly climbed over the last few years, as there are only two manufacturers that sell one for less than R400,000.
Both of them, unsurprisingly, are Chinese, taking the form of the R359,900 JAC T6 and the R399,900 Foton Tunland G7.
Mahindra, GWM, LDV, Peugeot and Nissan all have something in the R400k to R500k bracket, but every other carmaker in South Africa charges over half a million for even their most basic models.
There are 15 different brands that sell a double cab, but the three most prominent badges – Toyota, Ford, and Isuzu – can hardly be described as budget-friendly options these days.
The Hilux and D-Max start at R528,800 and R561,500, while the Ranger goes for at least R620,000.
Beyond this, you have options like the Mitsubishi Triton and VW Amarok, as well as the BYD Shark – the only plug-in hybrid pickup in the country.
On the extreme end of the scale, there’s the Jeep Gladiator and Ineos Quartermaster, which are the two of the most expensive high-riders in South Africa.
