July was an excellent month for the South African car industry, selling a total of 51,383 new models.
The Toyota Hilux was the number one choice, as expected, with 3,120 motorists picking one up last month. This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.
This was followed by the ever-popular VW Polo Vivo, which sold 2,409 units.
Two more bakkies – the Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max – took third and fourth place with 2,168 and 2,002 units, respectively.
The last model to crack the top five was the Toyota Corolla Cross, which moved 1,949 examples.
Not far behind is the Suzuki Swift, which moved up two places to sixth with 1,872 units.
Next up is the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro and its 1,604 units, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Toyota Starlet hatchbacks with their 1,464 and 1,322 sales.
The last spot in the top 10 was then taken by the Suzuki Fronx, which secured 1,103 new customers.
Just one unit behind is the Kia Sonet in 11th place, after which is the Toyota Fortner in 13th place with 984 sales.
The Suzuki Ertiga came 14th with 980 units, and the Nissan Magnite placed one spot lower down with 790 purchases.
The remainder of the top 20 stars with the Mahindra Pik Up, which came 16th overall with 783 showroom victories.
The VW Polo wasn’t far behind with 758 units, illustrating a massive sales gap between the Polo and its more affordable sibling.
Two more Toyota models – the Rumion and the Starlet Cross – tied for 18th place with 757 sales, and Toyota also took the last spot with the small Vitz, which managed to sell 753 examples.
In total, the top 20 cars accounted for 27,897 sales, representing 54.29% of the 51,383 vehicles sold in South Africa in July.
