Suzuki on a roll in South Africa

Suzuki has reported yet another win in South Africa, achieving its best-ever dealer sales and its second highest overall sales record to date.

According to the latest sales report published by the Automotive Business Council, a grand total of 5,257 Suzuki models were sold in July 2025.

This is just 142 units short of the brand’s all-time record of 6,399 units, which it achieved in January this year.

Furthermore, as many as 5,069 units were sold through the company’s dealership network, surpassing the previous record set in April by 54 units.

The remaining 1,188 examples were scooped up by the rental industry, corporate fleets, and the government.

Both of these milestones helped the Japanese automaker to once again secure its place as the country’s second-best-selling manufacturer behind the local juggernaut that is Toyota.

Breaking down the sales by vehicle type, the number one pick was, unsurprisingly, the affordable Swift hatchback, which moved 1,872 units.

This means that roughly 30% of all Suzuki vehicles sold in South Africa are Swifts, illustrating how important the small car is to the brand’s local success.

Another popular choice is the Fronx crossover, which found 1,220 customers last month.

This was followed by the Ertiga people carrier with 980 units, and the entry-level S-Presso hatchback with 445 units.

The last model in Suzuki’s top five is the Baleno hatch, which saw 401 examples make their way off the showroom floor in July.

“We are incredibly proud of this result, especially as it reflects the continued dedication and hard work of our dealer network across the country,” said Cristine Knight, Auto Dealer Sales Manager at Suzuki Auto South Africa.

“Their commitment to delivering exceptional service and customer care is the driving force behind our success. We remain focused on supporting them and our customers as we head into the final stretch of what has already been a remarkable year.”

Affordability is king

It may seem hard to believe now, but Suzuki wasn’t an especially popular brand in South Africa a few years ago.

In the mid-2010s, the Japanese badge was a fringe top 10 entry, but the company saw an explosive rise in popularity around the turn of the decade.

The Covid-19 pandemic undoubtedly played a large part in Suzuki’s rapid growth, as the event led to an unprecedented shift in consumer spending as the cost of goods soared and households were forced to scale back their purchasing habits.

Suzuki is the most affordable brand in South Africa by a wide margin, as it is the only manufacturer to offer 11 different cars for less than R300,000.

This wallet-friendly business strategy has clearly resonated with local buyers, who have shifted down-market over the past five years.

Luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have seen declining interest in both the new and used car markets, while brands like Suzuki, Mahindra, and Chery have all worked their way into each month’s best-sellers list.
