A staggering 181,287 used cars were sold between January and June 2025.
This is according to AutoTrader, which recently published its Mid-Year Industry Sales Report for the first half of 2025.
Pre-owned car sales increased by 7% year-on-year from the same period in 2024, and the average vehicle sold for R418,428 with a mileage of around 74,397km.
Broken down by brand, Toyota was unsurprisingly the top performer with an impressive 31,560 units under its belt – the equivalent of a 17% market share.
VW came second with 25,568 sales, and Ford rounded out the top three with 19,597 purchases.
The top three have a big lead over the other brands, as Hyundai came fourth with 10,618 units.
Right on its tail are BMW and Suzuki, which sold 10,428 and 10,049 models, respectively.
Mercedes-Benz landed in seventh with 8,485 units, and Nissan came eighth with 7,871 sales.
The final two spots in the top 10 were taken by Kia and Renault, which added 6,577 and 5,957 units to the overall total.
AutoTrader highlighted that more than 352 million searches were made on the platform over the six-month period under review.
Over 529 million pages were opened by roughly 17 million users, and the average person spent 3 minutes and 51 seconds per browsing session.
