Major disruptions in Gauteng this weekend

Gauteng motorists have been warned to expect delays this weekend in the wake of the G20 Leader’s Summit in Johannesburg.

The summit will take place next month and will result in temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and intermittent interruptions across many of the province’s key routes.

In preparation, a joint operation is being conducted this weekend to rehearse for the event, targeting highways and other high-security routes in central urban areas that will be used to transport various world leaders attending the G20 summit.

The operation is being led by a joint taskforce comprised of units from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Today, Friday 24 October 2025, saw closures begin at 09h00 across several roads in Joburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni, which will continue until 13h00.

Operations will continue on Saturday, 25 October, which will run from 08h00 to 10h00, and from 13h00 to 14h30.

The following major national and regional routes will be disrupted:

  • N1
  • N3
  • N12
  • M1
  • R21
  • R24
  • R512

Additionally, the following major arterial and urban roads will be affected:

  • Rand Show Road
  • 5th Street
  • Maude Street
  • Daisy Street
  • Rivonia Road
  • Grayston Drive
  • Whiteley Road
  • Melrose Boulevard
  • Corlett Drive
  • Athol Oaklands Road
  • Oxford Road
  • Glenhove Road
  • Jan Smuts Avenue
  • Rand Show Road
  • Nasrec Road
  • Golden Highway (Nasrec)

All of these areas will experience rolling road closures, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.

“Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and consider alternative routes where possible,” said the RTMC.

The authorities stated that clear signage, traffic officers, and real-time updates will be provided to motorists to keep them in the loop.
