Most popular used hybrids in South Africa – With pricing

Hybrids are rapidly gaining popularity in South Africa’s used car market.

According to AutoTrader’s Mid-Year Industry Report, the sale of hybrid cars increased by a whopping 86% year-on-year in the first six months of 2025.

It noted that 2,049 used hybrids were sold between January and June this year, and that hybrids are the clear favourite among motorists interested in new-energy vehicles (NEVs).

This is because hybrids promise a significant reduction in monthly fuel costs while not having the downsides associated with electric vehicles (EVs), such as driving range, charging times, and price.

That being said, the average cost of a hybrid is still very high in South Africa, even on the pre-owned market, mainly due to a lack of affordable models.

The first hybrid and electric cars introduced in South Africa were very expensive relative to their standard combustion engine counterparts, and while prices are lower on the used market, most are still not affordable for a typical household.

Case in point, the average hybrid sold through AutoTrader in the first half of 2025 cost a substantial R678,669.

While there are a few mass-market options like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Haval Jolion, the average price is skewed by other listings for luxury models like the GWM Tank 300, Volvo XC90, and Lexus NX.

Unsurprisingly, the Corolla Cross is by far the most popular used hybrid in South Africa, which is due to availability as much as price, given that it is the best-selling new hybrid as well.
