Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

Hatchbacks are still the bastions of affordable transport in South Africa, as evidenced by the sales figures for October 2025.

The model of choice for the average motorists is the VW Polo Vivo, which sold an impressive 2,678 units last month.

This makes it not only the most popular hatchback in the country, but also the second most popular vehicle overall behind the Toyota Hilux.

Not far behind is the Suzuki Swift, which moved an incredible 2,377 examples.

This was followed by the Toyota Starlet in third place with 1,613 units, and the Hyundai Grand i10 in fourth with 1,336 units.

The last model to clear four digits last month was the Toyota Vitz, which finished in fifth place with 1,200 sales.

Outside the top five, we have the evergreen VW Polo, which came sixth overall with 813 units.

The Suzuki Baleno moved up a spot last month to seventh with 596 purchases, pushing the Renault Kwid down to eighth place with its 544 units.

As for the last two slots in the top 10, there’s the Suzuki S-Presso with its 384 sales, and the Hyundai i20 with 288 showroom success stories.

All told, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 11,829 units, representing a staggering 21.1% of the 55,956 vehicles sold in South Africa over the past 31 days.
