While budget SUVs have been dominating the South African market in recent years, the luxury SUV segment has long been where the shopping for status-defining vehicles takes place.

These vehicles symbolise the pinnacle of luxury, and have for years, as top executives, directors, and sports stars spend their wealth on ultra-luxury, yet oftentimes family-friendly vehicles.

The average South African motorist is merely looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient daily driver, capable of completing work commutes, school runs, and the occasional weekend away.

Buyers of the most expensive options available worry less about efficiency, focusing instead on luxury offerings, special features, power, performance, and opulence.

Historically prestigious brands offer their customers only the very best in features, while their special editions and limited run models represent the ultimate motoring trophies for collectors.

Range Rover and Bentley are known for their luxury SUVs and have, for years, stood out as the brands that offer exclusivity in this class, while brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini have also joined the fold.

All of the SUVs on this list offer unrivalled performance, even when compared to some sports cars.

The Ferrari Purosangue, for example, is quintessentially Ferrari, fitted with a 6.5-litre V12 petrol engine, allowing the Prancing Horse to sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.3 seconds and reach speeds over 300km/h.

It is a bit of an outlier on this list, as very few luxury SUVs can truly boast this level of performance.

Only one of the most expensive SUVs in South Africa can boast greater performance than the Ferrari, and that is the Lamborghini Urus SE.

This Raging Bull sports a 4.0-litre turbocharged petrol-electric hybrid motor with an incredible power output of 588kW and 950Nm, allowing it to chase down 100km/h in 3.4 seconds and breach 300km/h.

While not every car in this list has the Ferrari’s racing pedigree or the performance reputation of the Lamborghini, each is a class-leading example of what driving luxury entails.
