The easiest way to renew your driver’s licence in South Africa
In a bid to ease mounting pressure on South Africa’s overwhelmed licence printing systems, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport will be accelerating the roll-out of its Smart Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs).
These centres aim to deliver efficient, ethical, and modern licensing services directly to the province’s communities while upholding the department’s road safety objectives.
Smart DLTCs are fully integrated into the eNaTIS administration system and are specially designed to serve as hubs of licensing services.
They offer an extensive range of licensing services, including vehicle licence renewals, as well as driving licence applications and renewals.
Currently, the department operates several of these Smart DLTCs across the province, including branches in Atteridgeville, Denlyn, Maponya Mall, Centurion, Protea Glen and Midrand.
The Smart DLTC in Umphakathi is set to open soon, which will further expand access to quality licensing services in townships and other underserved areas.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, said the rollout forms part of the provincial government’s “Smart Mobility Plan” and supports its broader road safety objectives.
“We are expanding Smart Licensing Centres to ensure services are closer to communities. These centres offer online, cashless services, with licence renewals taking approximately 10 minutes,” she said
The MEC added that the roll-out is about more than convenience, as it directly influences road safety.
“When licensing is accessible and corruption-free, more people get properly licensed instead of driving illegally or obtaining fake licenses. Road safety starts with proper licensing,” said Diale-Tlabela.
According to the department, these facilities have redefined the licensing experience, providing unparalleled efficiency and convenience while significantly improving turnaround times for licence renewals.
Reducing backlogs

As part of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s attempts to improve service delivery while reducing pressure on traditional licensing offices, the Smart DLTCs open on weekends as well.
These centres operate from Monday to Saturday, which allows working people to access licensing services at a time that is convenient.
Smart DLTC centres pride themselves on efficiency, offering a ten-minute service that makes use of smart enrolment technology and cashless systems to complete licence renewals quickly.
The department promises that these centres are corruption-free, with law enforcement officials managing the Smart DLTCs.
Appointment-only operations also eliminate the need for runners, ensuring further transparency and integrity of the processes.
The department believes that by making licensing accessible and eliminating corruption, these centres ensure that drivers are properly tested, making them legally licensed, competent drivers.
This supports the department’s “It starts with you” road safety campaign.
Smart DLTCs also support job creation for young people from the communities these centres serve.
“These centres reduce backlogs, expand capacity, and respond effectively to the province’s renewal service demands,” explained the MEC.
“They also relieve congestion at traditional licensing offices, improving the system for everyone.”
Smart DLTCs are strategically located to minimise the need for extensive travel to traditional licensing offices.
