Best-selling cars in South Africa

The South African car industry sold an impressive 50,073 units in January 2025, equating to roughly 1,615 units per day.

The nation’s appetite for the Toyota Hilux bakkie is as ravenous as ever, as it dominated the charts with 2,475 sales. This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.

The Toyota’s rival – the Ford Ranger – wasn’t far behind, taking second place with 2,071 units.

As far as passenger cars are concerned, the number one pick last month was the VW Polo Vivo, which ended third overall with 2,060.

The Suzuki Swift, which saw a massive drop in December, regained its former momentum with 2,029 sales wins.

The final model in the top five was a Chinese entry, namely the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, which sold 1,625 units.

The Toyota Vitz and Hyundai Grand i10 came sixth and seventh with 1,514 and 1,374 units, respectively, and the Toyota Starlet placed eighth with 1,372.

Another bakkie, the Isuzu D-Max, ended in ninth place thanks to 1,331 customers, and the Haval Jolion closed out the top 10 with 1,172 sales.

The duo of the Suzuki Fronx and Toyota Starlet Cross sold 1,161 and 1,119 units, and the Toyota Rumion and Kia Sonet placed 13th and 14th with 1,049 and 1,000 sales.

Dropping down to three-figure sales, we have the Suzuki Ertiga in 15th place with 937 units, followed by the Chinese Omoda C5 with 907.

The Toyota Corolla Cross, normally a top performer, only sold 873 units this time around, which may be due to stock issues, as it is unusual to see such a steep drop off.

The last three models in the top 20 are the Nissan Magnite, Mahindra Pik Up, and VW Polo, which sold 811, 753, and 738 units.
