Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

The Toyota Hilux topped South Africa’s best-selling bakkies list once again in January 2026, though the competition is closing in.

The Hilux sold a respectable 2,475 units last month, though this is considerably less than the 2,979 it managed in December.

This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.

This allowed its main rival, the Ford Ranger to close the gap with 2,071 units, though this is also less than the 2,236 units it sold one month prior.

Another model that saw a dip in sales was the Isuzu D-Max, which held onto third place, but which dropped from 1,549 to 1,331 units.

Outside the venerable top three, the Mahindra Pik Up delivered a good performance with 753 units earning it the fourth spot.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 79 was then able to reclaim a spot in the top five, thanks to 484 sales, which was followed by the GWM P-Series in sixth with 461 units.

The VW Amarok, which came fourth last time, fell down to seventh place with 321 purchases, putting it just ahead of the Nissan Navara in eighth place with 312 units.

The last two models to crack the top 10 last month were both Chinese, namely the JAC T-Series and the Foton Tunland, which sold 238 and 205 units, respectively.

In total, the top 10 bakkies moved a combined 8,651 units, representing 17.27% of the 50,073 vehicles sold in South Africa in January.
