What it costs to drive from Joburg to Durban at R20 per litre

With petrol prices decreasing at the start of the month, and it looking increasingly likely that they will increase slightly next month, now may be a good time to take advantage and head for the coast.

Despite lower petrol prices, travelling to the beach for whatever reason is by no means a cheap feat, with several costs adding to the equation, including petrol and toll fees.

That being said, it should still be cheaper to drive down the N3 that fly the same distance, depending on how fuel efficient your vehicle is.

According to a calculation by TopAuto, anyone who plans to drive down to the coast this month can expect to spend a minimum of R1,592.67 on a return trip.

What it costs to drive from Johannesburg to Durban

Using central Johannesburg as a starting point to central Durban, gives a distance of approximately 570km, which should take around six hours to complete.

Since the start of February, Petrol 95 retails for R20.10 per litre inland, following the fuel price adjustment that took effect on Wednesday, 4 February.

Should you have an opportunity to head towards the coast before the new month, you will be benefiting from current low fuel prices.

Here is a breakdown of what it could cost you to see the beach this month:

Fuel is not the only expense when heading towards the coast, as there are no fewer tha five toll plazas to pass through on the route.

Fees for the five plazas – De Hoek, Wilge, Tugela, Mooi, and Mariannhill – are as follows:

  • De Hoek – R65
  • Wilge – R90
  • Tugela – R96
  • Mooi – R67
  • Mariannhill – R16

Unless you use an alternative route, you will be passing through all five, accumulating an extra R334 in toll fees, either way.

Considering all of this, the best case scenario means paying as little as R796.30 to get to Durban in a fuel efficient car.

Conversely, it may cost as much as R1,821.40, or even more, if your car’s efficiency is on the opposite side of the range.

Calculating the cost to get to Durban is only half of the equation, besides if you are moving there, meaning these numbers can easily be doubled for a round-trip.

That being said, someone in an economical car making the trip can expect to budget as little as R1,592.60 to drive to Durban and back, while others may need to budget as much as R3,642.80.
