The salary you need to afford a Toyota Corolla Cross in South Africa in 2026

If you are looking to buy a new Toyota Corolla Cross on a finance plan, you will need to earn at least R45,000 per month to realistically afford monthly instalments, according to a calculation by TopAuto.

The crossover SUV remains one of the Japanese brand’s best performers, and is a local favourite passenger car.

There are currently seven Corolla Cross derivatives on offer, ranging in price from R414,800 to R561,700, at least until pricing for the new GR-Sport variant is announced.

The cheapest variant in the stable is the Corolla Cross 1.8 Xi, a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre petrol automatic with front-wheel drive.

In terms of performance, this variant is capable of producing 103kW and 172Nm while averaging 6.8l/100km.

The base version Xi is fitted with basic standard equipment, including LED headlights, keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, a 4.2-inch driver’s display, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, hill-assist control, and five airbags.

The mid-spec hybrid-electric XS and XR derivatives produce 90kW and 163Nm, with an average consumption figure of 4.3l/100km.

Added to the XS units are dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel, a 7-inch driver display, a rear-seat armrest, partial leather upholstery, front parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and black roof rails.

Above this is the XR, which adds 18-inch alloys, automatic high beams, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an anti-dazzle rearview mirror, a hands-free tailgate, a panoramic-view monitor, lane-trace assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

At the top of the range is the existing GR-Sport trimline, which adds unique bumpers, GR badges, bespoke suspension, and red interior accents.

Each of these models comes with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 6-services/90,000km service plan.

What you need to earn

The following formula can be used to work out the monthly repayments on a new Toyota Corolla Cross:

  • Car price – R414,800/R561,700
  • Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
  • Interest – 10.25%
  • Deposit – 0%
  • Balloon – No balloon payment
  • Extras – No optional extras

According to this calculation, you would need to pay at least R8,959.13 per month for Xi, or up to R12,098.48 per month for the hybrid GR-Sport.

Financial experts recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.

This means you’ll need to earn anywhere from R44,750 per month to  R60,500 per month to afford the Corolla Cross on a finance plan in South Africa.

This does not account for insurance, fuel, and maintenance, which must all be factored into your budget.
