Best-selling Chinese car brands in South Africa

Chinese brands have breathed new life into the South African new vehicle market, growing rapidly and gaining market share.

Despite the dominance of legacy brands like Toyota and VW, and the value for money offerings by Suzuki, brands like Chery and GWM rose through the ranks to secure themselves as local favourites.

According to the Automotive Business Council (Naamsa), GWM remains South Africa’s favourite Chinese badge, beating Chery in the process.

It must be noted that if Chery’s sub-brands’ sales are added to its February sales figures, it would hold the crown as South Africa’s best-selling Chinese carmaker.

The best-selling Chinese model in February also comes from Chery’s stable, as the Tiggo 4 Pro managed to ship 1,809 units, as reported by The Citizen using Naamsa sales data.

The GWM Haval Jolion may have lost out to its rival, only selling 1,108 units, but the brand had the last laugh, outselling Chery by 2,614 units to 2,312.

Joining them on the podium, and narrowly missing out on the top ten of all brands, was Jetour with 1,673 units sold in February.

In fourth place is Omoda & Jaecoo, selling a combined 1,297, and MG making it into the top five with 643 units sold.

Bakkie builder Foton managed to sell 401 units last month to claim sixth spot, while its rival JAC finished in seventh place with 289 sales.

The final two Chinese brands who report to Naamsa are BAIC and Changan, which sold 146 units and 131 units respecively.
