Best-selling used cars in South Africa right now – With pricing

The Ford Ranger was the best-selling pre-owned car in South Africa in February 2026.

According to the latest data from AutoTrader, the Blue Oval’s bakkie sold 2,069 units last month at an average price of R493,227 with 79,464km on the clock.

The Ranger’s main rival, the Toyota Hilux, wasn’t too far behind as it took second place with 1,604 units.

Third and fourth place went to the VW Polo Vivo and Polo with 1,389 and 1,299 sales, respectively, while fifth place was taken by the Suzuki Swift with 794 purchases.

This meant that the Toyota Fortuner dropped from fifth to sixth place with 794 sales, though it still holds the title as South Africa’s favourite used SUV.

Another Toyota, the Corolla Cross, landed in seventh place with 651 units, and the Isuzu D-Max followed in the eighth spot thanks to 558 customers.

The Hyundai Grand i10 came ninth with 550 sales, and a fourth Toyota model, the Starlet, closed the top 10 with 494 units.

Looking at the industry as a whole, sales remained strong, even if the sector recorded a small month-on-month decrease of 3.4%, dropping from 34,452 to 33,293 units.

However, this represents a 15.3% year-on-year increase from February 2025, showing positive overall growth.

“While month-on-month fluctuations are typical early in the year, the strong year-on-year growth in used vehicle sales highlights the continued resilience of South Africa’s pre-owned market,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.

“Although the new vehicle market has shown encouraging momentum, the used segment continues to play a critical role by providing consumers with more affordable alternatives in a price-sensitive environment.”

The average used car on the platform last month sold for R428,562 with an average age of five years and a mileage of 69,654km.

WesBank noted that the average value of new cars it financed increased by 13.3% year-on-year, going from R362,146 to R410,294, which it puts down to customers opting for higher-value vehicles.
