Major upgrades planned at South African international airport

The Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein is set to become a major hub for logistics and investment following an agreement between Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM).

The airport plays a critical role in the local economy, acting as a key gateway for the Free State, facilitating connectivity between the province and key domestic and international markets.

Last week, ACSA and the Mangaung Metro signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to strengthen regional collaboration and unlock economic development opportunities in the province.

According to ACSA, the agreement establishes a framework for coordinated planning and cooperation between the two entities to advance development initiatives in and around the airport precinct.

It will also support broader regional priorities, which include economic growth, skills development, infrastructure development, tourism, and investment attraction.

The partnership between ACSA and MMM aims to secure the airport’s role as a catalyst for regional development, positioning the Bram Fischer precinct as a hub for aviation activity, logistics, tourism and investment.

This agreement marks the next step in ACSA’s broader “airport city” and “aerotropolis” developments, which seek to leverage airport infrastructure to drive sustainable economic growth and development.

Key focus areas of the partnership include the following:

  • Economic growth and investment attraction
  • Skills development
  • Infrastructure development
  • Tourism promotion
  • Logistics and cargo development
  • Aerotropolis and urban development

The Bram Fischer International Airport is the latest airport to receive much-needed upgrades.

Last year, it was announced that South Africa’s airports are due for major upgrades, totalling billions.

Since then, it was announced that the R14.5 billion upgrades at the O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) are progressing well, as are the more than R10 billion upgrades to the Cape Town International Airport (CTIA).

Among the upgrades planned at the Bram Fischer International Airport is the overhaul of its runway, which is already underway.

A crucial collaboration

The agreement marks an important step in strengthening the collaboration between the two parties and establishes a platform for the implementation of joint initiatives to enhance the value of the airport as a regional gateway.

As the agreement moves from commitment to implementation, ACSA and MMM have emphasised the importance of sustaining the collaboration and the delivery of key projects to generate tangible benefits for Mangaung.

During the signing ceremony, Faith Zwane, ACSA Assistant General Manager for Cluster 1, outlined the importance of such collaboration between aviation infrastructure providers and local government.

“Airports are powerful economic enablers that extend far beyond aviation operations,” she mentioned.

“Through this partnership with the MMM, we are aligning our development vision to ensure that Bram Fischer International Airport continues to serve as a strategic gateway for the Free State while unlocking new opportunities for investment, skills development, trade and job creation in the region.”

She noted that by aligning planning processes and development priorities, the partnership with Mangaung aims to create an environment that enables sustainable growth.

At the same time, the hope is to ensure airport expansion and precinct development that is integrated with the city’s long-term economic and spatial development strategies.

Adding to Zwane’s comments, the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality City Manager, Sello More, noted that the airport represents a key factor in positioning the city as a hub for logistics and investment.

“Through the development of a logistics precinct, expanded cargo capabilities and aviation-linked industries, we are strengthening regional value chains while supporting South Africa’s broader trade corridors,” he said.

“This Memorandum of Understanding with ACSA provides an important framework for collaboration as we work together to unlock investment opportunities and drive economic diversification in the region.”
