Every hatchback you can buy under R4,500 per month in South Africa

Car buyers not looking to spend more than R4,500 per month on car repayments are in luck, with no fewer than five distinct models and a couple of derivatives available to choose from in South Africa.

Cheap hatchbacks offer budget shoppers, first-time buyers, and those scaling down, affordable mobility, leaving money in their budget for other expenses.

What’s more is that these affordable options also offer longer-term savings, whether that be on insurance premiums or, crucially, fuel.

According to a calculation by TopAuto, buyers looking to spend R4,500 or less per month will need to look at cars priced at R206,000 or less.

This is assuming no deposit is paid as part of the purchase agreement, no balloon is agreed upon as part of the final settlement, and the vehicle is financed at a prime lending rate of 10.25% over five years.

The R206,000 figure opens up 10 different options for buyers, with five of these being derivatives of the Suzuki S-Presso.

Therefore, only five distinct models manage to come in under this threshold, the cheapest of which is the Renault Kwid Evolution – unsurprising as it is the most affordable car currently on sale in South Africa.

Its R178,799 price tag translates to R3,915 per month when financed. The manual version of the Techno derivative is also priced below the R206,000 or R4,500 per month mark at R199,999, or R4,368 per month.

For this price, buyers can expect a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol motor capable of producing 50kW and 91Nm, a five-speed manual transmission, and a very frugal fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km.

All the models in this category boast similar figures, besides the Tata Tiago, which, for its R189,900, boasts the highest power output – 63kW and 113Nm – thanks to its 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor.
