Most fuel-efficient diesel cars in South Africa

Diesel prices in South Africa have been getting out of hand over the last few months, prompting drivers to look towards more efficient options in our market – most of which cost a pretty penny.

Despite the government extending the general fuel levy relief for another two months, which includes scrapping the diesel levy for the time being, consumers are still under pressure.

The situation initially looked much worse, as the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) announced the incorrect increases before rectifying its own mistake.

This month, wholesale diesel prices in coastal towns and cities range from R30.30 to R30.62 per litre, or between R31.17 and R31.88 per litre inland, depending on grade.

As diesel prices continue to trend upwards, now may be the time to switch to a more efficient diesel option, though the most efficient options may not be in everyone’s budget.

For example, the most fuel-efficient model on sale in South Africa is the R1 million Mercedes-Benz C220d in both its Avantgarde and AMG Line guises.

The German luxury sedan is fitted with a 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor producing no less than 162kW and 440Nm, which it sends to the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

This configuration allows the C220d models to achieve a claimed average diesel consumption of 4.7l/100km.

High prices seem to be the norm when looking at South Africa’s most fuel-efficient diesels, with a few notable exceptions, including the recently released Kia Carens.

Particularly in its LS derivative, which demands only R399,995 from buyers, offering a fuel consumption of 5.0l/100km, thanks to its 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine, which produces 85kW and 250Nm.

The automatic variants – including the LX, EX and SX – are also rather frugal, consuming 5.3 litres of diesel every 100km.

Besides the Carens, there aren’t too many budget fuel-efficient diesel cars in South Africa, with the Kia Seltos and the VW Caddy the only other models under R600,000.
