Best-selling cars in South Africa

Car sales maintained a positive trajectory in South Africa this April despite rising fuel prices.

A total of 47,979 units were sold last month, representing a 13% year-on-year increase from the same month last year.

The Toyota Hilux is still leading the pack, as expected, though diesel vehicles did see a big drop in interest compared to other models.

The Hilux sold 2,955 units, and the Ford Ranger came second with 2,103 units.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, using data from the Automotive Business Council.

The VW Polo Vivo came third, but it was nearly overtaken by the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, as the two cars sold 1,876 and 1,871 units, respectively.

Fifth place went to the Suzuki Swift with 1,556, and the Hyundai Grand i10 came sixth with 1,374.

The Haval Jolion also proved to be a hit last month with 1,277 units landing it the seventh spot.

The Toyota Corolla Cross and Suzuki Fronx then came eighth and ninth with 1,144 and 1,113 purchases.

Last up in the top 10 is the Isuzu D-Max, which saw a massive drop in sales last month, going from 3,008 to 1,045 units.

A surprise performer was the Jetour T2, which jumped into 11th place with 1,004 sales – an impressive feat given it didn’t crack the top 20 the month prior.

Another Chinese car, the Omoda C5, wasn’t far behind with 884 units.

The next three spots were taken by the Suzuki Ertiga, VW Polo, and Toyota Vitz, which sold 874, 817, and 772 units, respectively.

Four of the last five models to crack the top 20 are three Toyota models, including the Rumion in 16th with 747, the Starlet in 17th with 733, the Urban Cruiser in 18th with 711, and the Fortuner in 20th place with 664. The Kia Sonet came 19th with 689 sales.

In total, the top 20 passenger and light commercial vehicles sold a combined 24,119 units, accounting for 50 of all the cars sold in South Africa last month.
