Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

Bakkies were a relatively strong component of South Africa’s automotive sales in May 2026, despite the high cost of diesel.

The Toyota Hilux is still dominating the charts with 2,488 units, making it the most popular vehicle in the country.

This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.

Second place went to the Ford Ranger, which managed 2,073 sales.

However, sales did see a sharp drop off with the third entry, the Isuzu D-Max, which just managed to break four figures with 1,009 sales.

Next up is the GWM P-Series, which managed to beat the Mahindra Pik-Up to claim fourth place with 689 sales.

The Pik Up wasn’t far behind, mind you, as the Indian bakkie sold 632 units.

Outside the top five, we have the Toyota Land Cruiser 79, which managed 466 sales, and the VW Amarok, which sold 417.

The Nissan Navara claimed the eighth spot with 288 units, and the JAC T-Series came ninth with 261 sales.

Last up is the Peugeot Landtrek, which managed to knock the Foton Tunland out of the top 10 thanks to 230 customers.

In total, the top 10 bakkies sold 8,553 units, accounting for 16.7% of the 51,071 vehicles sold in South Africa in May.
