Best-selling used cars in South Africa right now – With pricing
The South African pre-owned car industry recorded sustained year-on-year growth in June 2026, even though the monthly sales saw a slight dip.
This is according to new data from AutoTrader, showing that a total of 31,363 used vehicles were sold on the platform last month.
This is a 1.1% YoY increase from the 31,008 units recorded in June 2025, but a 2.7% MoM decrease from the 32,224 units sold in May 2026.
The most popular model last month was the Ford Ranger, which sold 1,823 units, putting it at a noticeable lead over the Toyota Hilux in second place with 1,410 sales.
The duo of the VW Polo Vivo and Polo then came third and fourth with 1,110 and 1,091 units, respectively.
Fifth place was taken by the Suzuki Swift with 758 sales, after which came the Toyota Fortuner with 707 units.
Hyundai’s Grand i10 claimed the seventh spot with 589 units, while the Toyota Corolla Cross came eighth with 583 units.
The last two models to crack the top 10 were the Isuzu D-Max and the Toyota Starlet, which sold 522 and 502 units.
“June’s used car sales data points to a market that remains resilient, even as consumers become more selective. The strongest performers continue to be vehicles that offer a clear balance of practicality, value and manageable running costs,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.
“While established favourites such as the Ranger, Hilux, Polo Vivo and Polo continue to dominate, the movement further down the table shows how affordability and efficiency are playing an increasingly important role in purchase decisions.”
The Corolla Cross saw the biggest YoY growth of the group, with sales increasing by 33.4% in June. Mienie said this may be an indication that the hybrid version was greatly contributing to its appeal.
As far as brands are concerned, Toyota is still number one with 5,275 total sales. VW came second with 4,100 units, and Ford was third with 3,107.
The average price of used cars sold on AutoTrader last month was R423,080, up from R418,770 in June 2025. They also had an average mileage of 71,419km.
