20 most popular cars in South Africa right now

Toyota had an extraordinarily good month in South Africa in July 2026, selling a grand total of 14,142 new cars.

The Japanese carmaker accounted for seven of the top 20 best-selling cars this month, with models in a variety of segments from bakkies to hatchbacks, family crossovers, and Adventure SUVs.

The top-selling vehicle last month was, unsurprisingly, the Hilux, which sold 4,189 units. This was followed by the VW Polo Vivo, which is the country’s best-selling passenger car with 2,513 units.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, using data from the Automotive Business Council.

The Chery Tiggo 4 came third with 2,110 units, knocking the Ford Ranger down to fourth place with its 2,063 sales.

Fifth place was then taken by the Isuzu D-Max, meaning that bakkies accounted for three of the five best-selling vehicles in July.

The Suzuki Swift claimed sixth place thanks to 1,916 customers, after which came the Toyota Corolla Cross and Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,626 and 1,551 units, respectively.

Toyota took ninth place thanks to the Starlet, with 1,453 sales, and the Suzuki Fronx closed out the top 10 with 1,185 units.

As for the top 15, we have the Haval Jolion, Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Jetour T2, and Omoda C5, which added 1,132, 1,085, 968, 925, and 889 units to the nation’s total sales, respectively.

The 16th spot was taken by the Toyota Vitz with 885 units, and the Kia Sonet came 17th with 830 purchases.

The last three models to make their way into the top 20 are the Toyota Starlet Cross with 803 units, the VW Polo with 756 units, and the Toyota Fortuner with 722 units.

In total, the top 20 passenger and light commercial vehicles accounted for 31,760 units, or 61.6% of the 51,558 cars sold in South Africa last month.
