The top bakkie outselling its closest competitor by 48 units per day

The Toyota Hilux is by far the most popular bakkie in South Africa, selling roughly 47% more units than its closest competitor.

In August 2026, the Hilux sold a total of 3,881 units, which averages out to around 125 units per day.

By comparison, the nation’s second most popular pickup, the Ford Ranger, sold 2,373 examples over the same period, translating to 77 units per day.

This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.

Third place then went to the Isuzu D-Max with 2,005 units, which was the last bakkie to crack four digits last month.

Next up is the Mahindra Pik Up with 612 units, and the GWM P-Series with 588 sales.

Outside the top five, the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 sold 434 units, putting it ahead of the VW Amarok in seventh place with 351.

The Nissan Navara moved 293 units last month, securing the eighth spot, and the last two brands to crack the top were both Chinese.

The JAC T-Series sold 246 models, and the Foton Tunland added 158 units to the industry’s total.

Overall, the top 10 bakkies sold 10,941 units, representing 18.89% of the 57,898 vehicles sold in South Africa in August.
