What it costs to renew your car licence disc online in South Africa

I renewed my car licence disc online using the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS), and it only took five minutes.

A few weeks ago, I got a WhatsApp message informing me that my vehicle disc was set to expire later this month, and that I could renew it online.

This is something I’ve done before using the NaTIS service, which I found to be easy, fast, and convenient.

On Sunday, 18 October 2026, I decided it was time to renew and accessed the site. You’ll need to create an account if you’re a first-time user, which takes roughly five to 10 minutes to fill out all the details.

Thankfully, I already had an account and simply logged in, which brought me to the site’s home page.

This is where you’ll find all of the services available on the NaTIS website, including bookings for driver’s licence card renewals, learner and driver tests, and reporting motor vehicle accidents.

Selecting the option to renew a motor vehicle licence takes you to a page that lists all of the cars registered in your name that are due for renewal.

Each car is listed along with its register number, licence number, and the date the licence disc is set to expire.

Moving to the next page shows the total amount owed on the car which, in my case, came to R528.00 for a Hyundai i20 hatchback.

You can also click on a link to pull up a breakdown of the fees, which shows more details about the vehicle, as well as the various components that make up the total fee.

From there, you’re taken to a page where you fill in your name and contact information, and input the address you want the licence disc delivered to.

Finally, you’ll be greeted by a payment page that recaps the fees owed. My total came to R627.00, including the delivery fee:

  • Licence fee – R456.00
  • Transaction fee – R72.00
  • Penalties and arrears – R0.00
  • Other outstanding debts – R0.00
  • Sub total – R528.00
  • Courier fee – R99.00
  • Total – R627.00

You can pay using a debit or credit card, which can be authorised using a mobile banking app. The whole process only took me five minutes.

On Wednesday, 21 October, I received an SMS stating that my RTMC parcel would be delivered within three to five working days.

However, I received another message later that day informing me that my parcel was out for delivery. Bear in mind this was at 16h50, so I unsurprisingly did not receive it that day.

However, the package arrived the next morning, meaning it took just over three days for me to receive my new licence disc after I renewed it on Sunday night.

I’ve personally found the NaTIS site to be very convenient and would recommend it to other motorists who have access to the service.

Unfortunately, the NaTIS system isn’t available nationwide, and services like licence disc renewals or driver’s licence card bookings are currently limited to provinces such as Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.

Simon Zwane, spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), previously told our sister publication MyBroadband that relevant provincial authorities must decide whether or not to support the platform.

“The RTMC has made the service available to all provinces and will be able to roll it out as soon as the provincial authorities indicate their readiness to have the services,” he said.
