Hunting for a second-hand BMW M2 under R700,000

BMW M2 Header

The BMW M2 is as close to the perfect car as you can get while bound by the rules of reality.

It is available as a manual or automatic; packs a turbocharged 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder petrol engine which produces 302kW; and goes from 0-100km/h in just over 4 seconds.

Top speed is then a limited 250km/h.

It looks incredible and sounds even better, has a ton of modern technology on the inside, and can be used as a daily driver thanks to its 5-year/100,000km BMW Motorplan.

All this for a starting price of R1.1 million for the new Competition version – which, when compared to its competitors in the market, is a great deal.

And by great deal I mean it is quite expensive and buying a second-hand version is definitely more likely for most of us.

Second-hand M2

In a quest to see how much we could save by going the used-car route, however, we quickly discovered that the M2 is just as desirable after having a previous owner.

So desirable, in fact, that if you have anything less than R700,000 you may want to consider looking for a Japanese alternative.

To hunt down the most-affordable used BMW M2 currently on offer in South Africa, we used popular car classifieds site AutoTrader.

With a budget of R700,000, we found there were not many vehicles on offer – and the ones that were had a few years and a few kilometres on the clock, and pre-dated the current Competition model.

Fortunately, not too many kilometres so as to void the included warranty – but enough for you to start putting money aside for work the car may need in the future.

For our search, we also stuck to cars on offer from well-known dealers – as the listing information is more likely to have been verified before being posted for sale.

The top three options we found are detailed below.

2016 BMW M2 Auto – R699,900

Key Figures

  • Mileage – 30,500km
  • Previous Owners – 1
  • Service History – Full Franchise
  • Dealer – Legacy Motor Group

The first used M2 comes in an Alpine White colour and features several extras, including: a camera for reversing, lane departure warning system, park distance control, and the M Driver’s Package.

The interior is then black leather with blue stitching.

It looks clean and the lack of mileage is a plus.

2017 BMW M2 Auto – R699,900

Key Figures

  • Mileage – 46,300km
  • Previous Owners – 1
  • Service History – Full Franchise
  • Dealer – BMW Fourways

Long Beach Blue – the best colour for the M2 in our humble opinion – is paired with a black leather interior for this model.

It has a few more kilometres on the clock than the previous offer, but is a year younger, which can save you money in the long run.

It also features several extras, including a rear view camera, park distance control, and an electric glass sunroof.

2016 BMW M2 Auto – R699,990

Key Figures

  • Mileage – 54,000km
  • Previous Owners – 1
  • Service History – Full Franchise
  • Dealer – Supertech BMW Durban

Another Long Beach Blue automatic model finishes our selection – with 54,000km on the clock and a black leather interior.

It, too, has a range of extras included, such as a rear view camera, park distance control, and the M Driver’s Package.

This allows for a faster top speed, which is a big plus for bragging rights.
