5 cars under R500,000 that give you the longest range on a single tank

We set out to find one vehicle in each major segment that claims to provide the highest range on a single tank.
Unfortunately, total range generally goes hand-in-hand with tank size – which usually grows with vehicle size, and in turn, vehicle price.
At the top-end of the price spectrum there is little competition in terms of driving range, however, as the majority of these vehicles boast segment-leading capacities.
With the aim of keeping things as affordable as possible, we ignored these luxury vehicles and only looked at those with prices under R500,000.
When price becomes part of the equation, every additional kilometre counts and automakers tend to use smaller engines and turbochargers to improve fuel economy.
It is also worth noting that the real-world range these vehicles will provide might not match the manufacturer’s claims, as it is highly dependent on how generous you are with the accelerator pedal.
Below, we list one vehicle in each major segment that claims to have the longest range on a single tank – and costs less than R500,000.
