How much the “best cars in South Africa” cost to buy

The South African Car of the Year (COTY) awards presented by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) recently revealed the country’s “best cars”.

The overall winner of the competition was the Peugeot 2008 SUV, which has a South African starting price of R364,900.

The second overall winner was the Toyota Hilux Double Cabat a starting price of R460,600 – with the BMW 4 Series sitting in third at R801,438.

Scoring

According to the SAGMJ, the scoring process to determine the COTY includes not only juror scoring, but automated factors such as sales performance, segment share, and value for money.

“The automated scoring information was provided by Lightstone Auto, which provides data-driven insight, online market intelligence, and new vehicle sales data to the South African automotive industry,” said the SAGMJ.

The winners were then chosen out of a selection of 59 new vehicles that were released in the country between 1 November 2019 and 1 March 2021, spanning 11 categories.

The overall champion, which takes home the Jurors Excellence award, was determined by using “raw scoring” to reveal which vehicle received the highest scores before automated factors were included.
