R400,000 for a new car sounds like a lot to any reasonably-minded person – but in 2021 in South Africa, it is not.
For this amount you are not guaranteed to roll around in luxury or have tons of power on tap when you accelerate.
This is highlighted by the fact that “entry-level” desirable cars like the BMW 1 Series start at R590,000, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class at R660,000, and the Audi A3 at R560,000.
It is the way things are, and we must accept these numbers are the “new normal”.
Surprising options
However, it does not mean there is nothing exciting or impressive on offer for under R400,000 in the country.
Whether it’s a hot hatch or a 4×4, there are a handful of vehicles for sale which will make you say: “I am surprised you can get that for under R400,000.”
We list these vehicles below.
Abarth 595 Turismo
With 121kW on offer in a small, 3-door body the 595 is an excellent option for darting around backroads while gaining respectful nods from car enthusiasts.
Additionally, the badge has a scorpion on it – which is difficult to not love.
Mahindra Pik Up 2.2CRDe 4×4 S6 Karoo
You can get yourself a double-cab 4×4 bakkie from Mahindra with a name that suggests it likes going off-road.
This manual, turbo-diesel option offers 103kW and 320Nm.
Haval Jolion 1.5T Super Luxury
Haval’s top-end Jolion, aptly called the “Super Luxury”, can be purchased for under R400,000.
It offers a range of comfort and assistance features, along with a modern cabin that hosts the latest tech the brand has at its disposal.
Renault Duster 1.5dCi Zen 4×4
If you want both all-wheel drive and an SUV body style, the new Renault Duster offers a lot of value.
Priced at a bit over R376,000, this version of the Duster packs a 1.5-litre, turbo-diesel engine that produces 80kW and 260Nm.
Suzuki Jimny 1.5 GLX AllGrip Auto
No list of “affordable” cars that pack a surprise is complete without the Suzuki Jimny.
The off-roader offers 4×4 capabilities in a compact package that will see you bouncing over hills on the weekend.
