Chery South Africa has announced that its flagship Tiggo 8 Pro will launch in South Africa in the coming weeks.
The new SUV will be available in two specifications at launch, both driven by a 1.6-litre, turbo-petrol engine.
As standard, the range will come with an around-view monitor, eight-speaker Sony sound system, dual-zone climate control, seven seats, and at least two high-definition TFT displays.
However, these are the only confirmed specifications for the Tiggo 8 Pro in South Africa thus far.
To find out more about the SUV, we looked at the markets in which this Chery model is already on sale.
What to expect
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is on sale in several markets around the globe – including Russia, where it is offered in Speedline and Dreamline trims.
Both options enjoy a high level of standard equipment, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment display, while the range-topping spec also gets an 8-inch LCD screen that handles climate control settings.
For South Africa, Chery has confirmed that both the dual and triple-screen cabins will be on offer.
The Russian Tiggo 8 Pro models also feature all-round LED lights, keyless entry and start, cruise control, ambient lighting, a hands-free boot lid, a wireless charger, leather seats, a six-way electrically-adjustable driver seat, a multifunction steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control.
In addition, buyers opting for the more expensive version are treated to heated front and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, brown upholstery, an electrically-adjustable front passenger seat, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera system, front parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring.
Luggage capacity for the large SUV measures 1,179 litres in five-seater mode and expands to 2,101 litres with only the front seats up.
Assistance
In the driver assistance and safety departments, the Tiggo 8 Pro continues to impress.
Both models in Russia are fitted with automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, hill start and descent assist, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, ABS with emergency brake assist, rollover mitigation, and six airbags.
Chery said that this Tiggo scores a 5-star Chinese NCAP safety score, as a result.
It must be noted that few of these features are confirmed for the local market, but judging from the extensive spec sheet of the Tiggo 4 Pro, it’s safe to assume the Tiggo 8 Pro will be well equipped in South Africa.
Performance
The Tiggo 8 Pro in Russia sports a 1.6-litre, turbo-petrol engine connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives the front wheels.
The combination allows the SUV to sprint to 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, reach a top speed of 185km/h, and consume fuel at a combined rate of 7.0l/100km.
While the engines might be similar across regions, the local versions will generate 15Nm more torque – providing 136kW and 290Nm.
This means the local models will likely boast improved performance figures.
The seven-seater then measures 4,722mm long, 1,860mm wide, and 1,705mm tall – making it ever-so-slightly larger than a BMW X3.

South African pricing and more details on the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro will be announced soon, said Chery South Africa.
