Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The Toyota Starlet was the best-selling hatchback in South Africa in January 2022, followed by the newly-facelifted VW Polo.

The Toyota narrowly pulled ahead by selling 17 units more than the VW, thus putting Toyota at the top of the best-selling bakkie, hatchback, and SUV lists for January.

In third for the month sits the VW Polo Vivo, 304 units ahead of the Suzuki Swift in fourth.

The Swift had an excellent January in terms of sales, selling 1,069 units – including 11 Swift Sports – to become Suzuki’s first model to ever sell over 1,000 vehicles in a single month in South Africa.

The Toyota Agya also performed well during the month, placing fifth with 888 units sold.

With 100 models moved, the VW Golf 8 GTI in 15th place was the most surprising entry in the best-sellers list for January.

At a starting price of R682,700, it is one of the more expensive hatchbacks in the country, but it managed to beat popular vehicles like the Ford Figo and Toyota Corolla Hatchback in terms of sales.
