The new BMW M240i has rocketed to the top levels of the power rankings in its price bracket, following its launch in South Africa.
Its 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine produces an exciting 285kW and 500Nm.
This power is put down through an “intelligent” all-wheel drive system and results in impressive performance:
- Acceleration from 0-100km/h – 4.3 seconds
- Top Speed – 250km/h
Thanks to these figures – and its price of R1,062,420 – the M240i is one of the fastest and most powerful cars you can buy for under R1.1 million in the country.
Its competitors in this category are the Ford Mustang GT, Audi TT RS, Audi S4, and Toyota GR Supra “Track”.
In fact, BMW even states that the power on offer from the new M240i “puts it on par with past BMW M2 versions”.
The table below shows where the M240i sits in the power ranking.
| Model | Power / Torque | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Mustang 5.0 GT | 331kW / 529 Nm | R1,061,100 |
| Audi TT RS | 294kW / 480Nm | R1,099,000 |
| BMW M240i xDrive | 285kW / 500Nm | R1,062,420 |
| Audi S4 TFSI | 260kW / 500Nm | R1,003,500 |
| Toyota GR Supra Track | 250kW / 500Nm | R1,078,600 |
Models which follow the GR Supra Track see a sharp drop in power, with the Audi TTS, Honda Civic Type R, John Cooper Works Mini Clubman and Countryman, and BMW M135i all offering below 230kW.
Features
As with any high-end BMW, the power and its performance are only half the story.
BMW has fitted the M240i with a range of features as standard.
This includes a pack of M Sport items, including: differential, brakes, suspension, spoiler, aerodynamic kit, seats, and steering wheel.
Adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch mags, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment display with smartphone mirroring, and luxury finishes are then added to this.
As standard, each car is also equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission – providing launch control and shifter paddles.
BMW stated that all new models sold in South Africa come with a 5-year/100,000km Motorplan maintenance contract.
This covers all service, maintenance, and normal wear-and-tear items – excluding tyres and fuel.
