Hatchbacks that compete against the new Renault Clio

Renault has released the fifth generation of its iconic Clio in South Africa, and it’s quite the looker.

The hatchback has a starting price of R309,900, while the range-topper will cost you R349,900.

This difference in price can be attributed to varying levels of features – as a 1.0-litre, turbo-petrol drivetrain powers the entire range.

The engine generates 74kW and 160Nm, sending the five-speed manual Renault to 100km/h in 11.8 seconds.

Top speed comes in at a decent 187km/h, with combined fuel consumption pegged at 5.7l/100km.

Specs

The Clio packs a competitive spec sheet that includes all-round LED headlights, a multifunction steering wheel, emergency brake assist, hill-start assist, and a 7.0-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and six speakers.

Depending on the model, it also boasts cruise control, high-beam assist, one-touch electric windows, keyless entry and start, a wireless charger, ambient lighting, and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster.

Buyers also have the option to install the upgraded Intens specification pack for an additional R15,000, which brings a 9.3-inch vertical central display, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Each new Renault Clio is sold with a 5-year/150,000km mechanical warranty and a 2-year/30,000km service plan.

The market

The new Renault Clio aims to make a splash in one of South Africa’s most competitive segments.

While its looks and features make it an attractive value proposition, it’s going up against one of the biggest sellers in the country – the VW Polo.
