Cars you can buy for the same price as the new BMW 220d

The new BMW 2 Series recently landed in South Africa with the popular 220d model starting at R819,278.

Along with the higher starting price than the model it is replacing, the new two-door coupe sees a much more extensive equipment list.

For the mid-range 220d, owners get three-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a leather multifunction steering wheel, Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery, front sport seats, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and cruise control with braking function from 30km/h and up.

Furthermore, interaction with the car takes place through a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and BMW ConnectedServices.

The M Sport body kit, an M rear spoiler, M Sport suspension, and 19-inch alloy wheels are standard, too.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 48-volt mild-hybrid system along with a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel motor, paired to an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels.

The powertrain has 140kW and 400Nm on tap, allowing the 220d to sprint to 100km/h in 7.0 seconds with the built-in launch control system.

Top speed is rated at 237km/h with combined fuel consumption coming in at an impressive 4.8l/100km.

The market

R800,000 cars are plentiful on the South African new-car market, with a wide variety of brands to choose from.

However, the new BMW with its two-door coupe body style and athletic body kit cater more towards the enthusiast crowd, as practicality is not its main attribute.

We therefore looked at the sportier cars in the R800,000 price bracket, which also included hot hatchbacks.

Detailed below are the new cars on sale in South Africa for the same price as the cheapest new BMW 2 Series.
