The South African car market continued its gradual post-Covid recovery in April, improving its sales year-on-year by 4.3% to a total of 37,107 units sold.
Toyota was severely impacted by flooding in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, leading to the manufacturer selling under 10,000 units per month for the first time this year.
Despite this, Toyota kept its spot as the country’s best-selling brand by a large margin, selling a total of 8,952 vehicles during this time.
The brand closest to Toyota is none other than VW, which moved 5,084 units. VW’s Polo Sedan remains a popular choice for local car buyers, being the only sedan to make it into the top 20 best-sellers list.
In the hatchback category, a standout model during April was the Suzuki Swift, which jumped to the number-one best-selling vehicle in the passenger-car segment, which doesn’t include bakkies or mini-buses.
The Swift sold 503 models more last month than it did the month before, moving from the 10th best-selling car in the country in March to the second best-selling car in April, now sitting only behind the Hilux bakkie.
