With petrol prices expected to skyrocket once the current tax holiday comes to an end in June, fuel-efficient cars may be more important than ever.
Petrol broke the R20-per-litre mark last year and has since only kept on rising, with current inland prices sitting at R21.84 a litre for petrol 95.
There are several ways to reduce your fuel consumption, from more efficient driving practices to fuel-saving car features like a stop-start system.
However, buying a fuel-efficient car might be one of the single best ways to reduce your consumption, making those costly trips to the pump less frequent.
We looked through all the vehicles available in South Africa to find the most fuel-efficient cars currently on the market.
The cars
The benchmark for this list was a combined consumption of 5.0l/100km or better.
This was enough to provide a wide range of models, including small, affordable city hatchbacks like the Suzuki Celerio, up to multi-million supercars like the Porsche Panamera 4 e-hybrid.
Unsurprisingly there’s no shortage of hybrid models that make the cut, with over 20 vehicles averaging incredible consumption figures, with one such example – the Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge – doing an astonishing 1.6l/100km.
Detailed below are the most fuel-efficient cars in South Africa, according to their consumption figures.
