Next-generation Apple CarPlay will take over your whole cabin

Apple has revealed that the next generation of CarPlay is coming in 2023 and that it will “fundamentally change the way people interact with their vehicles.”

CarPlay was first released in 2014 and allows owners to access certain iPhone applications through their car’s infotainment system.

Features include unlocking and starting the vehicle, making calls, receiving and responding to messages, streaming online music, accessing online navigation, and customised wallpapers.

Now, Apple has taken it one step further by seamlessly integrating the new CarPlay with vehicle hardware to provide content on multiple different displays.

A new in-cabin experience

The new Apple CarPlay integrating so deeply with the car’s systems will offer a whole new in-cabin experience by allowing drivers and passengers to use different features and functions across several screens at the same time.

This will include controlling the radio and climate control directly with CarPlay, as well as easy access to weather, music, and added widgets for a wide variety of “at-a-glance information.”

The new application will also be capable of replacing the original manufacturer’s gauges to display speed, fuel level, oil temperature, route information, traffic signs, and more on the instrument cluster.

In addition, drivers will be able to customise the visual experience by selecting different designs for gauges and displays that suit their preferences.

To further enhance the new cabin experience, Apple Maps will introduce multistop routing to let users plan a route with a maximum of 15 stops in advance, and then automatically sync routes to their iPhone when they’re ready to go.

The Home app can also be paired to the new CarPlay for easily interacting with and monitoring the status of internet-connected accessories at the owner’s property, such as garage doors.

The company said more details are coming soon and that the next generation of Apple CarPlay will be installed on vehicles that will make their debut next year.
