Jeep has launched its new Gladiator Rubicon in South Africa and the double cab has taken the crown from the VW Amarok to become the most expensive bakkie currently on the market.
With a starting price of R1,259,900 there’s nothing that comes quite close to the Jeep in terms of cost, meaning the the biggest competitors to the newcomer are those with similar capabilities and power.
However, it won’t be easy besting the Gladiator as it offers the off-road-focused brand’s “Trail Rated” badge that bestows upon it impressive utilitarian credentials:

The Jeep is then powered by a hefty 3.6-litre, V6 petrol engine generating 209kW and 347Nm, delivering drive to all four wheels through a permanent all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed auto-box.
The Command-Trac and Rock-Trac systems with front and rear locking differentials are also included, allowing for features such as SelecSpeed control which manages vehicle speed between 1-8km/h in low range while traversing off-road terrains without requiring throttle or brake input, allowing the driver to focus on steering.
