Best-selling car brands in South Africa

There were 41,019 new vehicle sales in South Africa in June 2022, marking an increase of 1,842 units over the previous month.

Toyota once again maintained its place as the country’s favourite car manufacturer, making a sharp rebound after a dip in sales in May as a result of flooding at its facility in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Another brand to see a jump in sales was VW, which saw an additional 894 units make their way off the showroom floor last month when compared to the month before.

Suzuki continues to hold firm as South Africa’s third-largest automotive brand overall, selling just shy of 300 more units than it did in May.

Hyundai and Ford saw small a dip in sales but nonetheless continued to maintain their positions as the country’s fourth and fifth best-selling vehicle makers in June, respectively.

Car sales

It is estimated that 34,935 units, or 85.2% of total sales, came from dealerships in June 2022, according to Naamsa.

A further 8.6% of units made their way to rental fleets, 5% went to industry corporate fleets, leaving the remaining 1.2% of vehicles as government purchases.

Passenger vehicle sales saw a 20.5% increase over the same period in June 2021, indicating a rebound for the industry as the country slowly recovers from the recession brought about by the pandemic, said Naamsa.

The same can not be said for light commercial vehicles (LCV), however, as bakkies and minibusses recorded a decline of 2,329 units, or 20.8% compared to the same month last year.

This puts LCV sales at 8,877 units for June 2022, compared to 11,206 units in June 2021.

A more positive trend is that vehicle exports from South Africa grew by 5,044 units – an 18% increase over the corresponding period last year.

This is also a big improvement over May, as 25,786 vehicles were exported in the previous month, compared to 33,054 units in June.

The brands

Toyota, VW, Suzuki, Hyundai, and Ford all held their respective positions as the top five automotive brands in South Africa last month.

The other top ten brands also remained the same with Renault, Kia, Haval, Isuzu, and Nissan maintaining good sales.

Nissan overtook Renault in June as the sixth-best-seller, but the two remain very close to one another in total sales.
