AWD Mercedes-Benz Motorhome launching in South Africa soon

Mercedes-Benz Vans South Africa told TopAuto that, in a few months’ time, the local market will get a Sprinter all-wheel-drive (AWD) Motorhome converted through an official Mercedes-Benz Vans Partner.

The AWD Motorhome is planned for a domestic introduction in late November, and it will feature the latest in-car tech and a variety of cabin configurations to meet customer needs.

These conversions will retain all the original after-sales agreements and be offered as pre-converted units, unless the customer has specific additional demands.

What to expect

Mercedes-Benz Vans said the Sprinter AWD Motorhome in South Africa will be sold in several configurations, including a two-sleeper, four-sleeper, or mobile office.

The company noted that with the recent shift to hybrid and online working arrangements, this Sprinter will also enable individuals to work on the go and in scenic locations by installing a workstation with Wi-Fi, beds, and a “luxury kitchen”.

What’s more is that owners would not need a special licence to drive this Mercedes. The kerb weight comes in under 3,500kg meaning a standard passenger car licence will still suffice.

Unfortunately, however, as the AWD Motorhome is still a few months away from its local launch, these were the only details the company could share.

To get a better idea of what else we can expect from the upcoming Motorhome, we looked at the current-generation Sprinter Tourer which is also offered in all-wheel drive with a customisable cabin.

This particular Mercedes gets keyless start, a radio with Bluetooth, an electronic parking brake, crosswind assist, active brake assist, and lane keeping assist – while optional extras include a wireless charger, two upgraded infotainment systems, electric front seats, additional cargo compartments, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, parking assist, and drive away assist.

Most of these features are expected to be available on the Motorhome derivative come November, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few new ones, too.

The Sprinter AWD Motorhome’s party trick is not its configurable cabin, but rather its ability to take that cabin to places once thought impossible to reach for a van.

This is done with a newly-developed all-wheel-drive system with fully-variable torque delivery – as opposed to the older “engageable” system that fed 35% of torque to the front and 65% to the rear in 4×4 mode.

Not only does this new setup offer improved traction and handling over the outgoing generation, it also works much more quietly, said the manufacturer.

Power is then derived from a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine with 140kW married to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
