The emissions tax you pay when buying a Range Rover

Included in the price of most new petrol and diesel vehicles on the market is a carbon (CO2) tax that the buyer must pay for the use of that car.

For passenger cars under 3,500kg, this tax equates to R151.80 per gram for CO2 emissions exceeding 95g/km. In other words, the emissions levy is only payable if a vehicle emits more than 95g of CO2 per kilometre driven.

For double cabs, the tax is rated at R202.40 per gram exceeding 175g/km.

Most hybrids and plug-in hybrids, as well as all-electric vehicles, do not exceed this emissions threshold and a carbon tax is therefore not tacked onto their prices.

However, for the majority of vehicles driven by petrol and diesel, an emissions tax is a common sight on the pricing sheet.

Range Rover emissions tax

Land Rover, and by extension Range Rover, is one such automaker whose high-end vehicles with big powerplants demand the addition of emission taxes in South Africa.

The amount taxed is not a flat rate, though, but rather dependent on the size of the motor fitted to the particular SUV.

Across the various model ranges the drivetrains include at least four plug-in hybrids, four diesels, and five petrols – each with its own level of emissions that necessitates its own carbon tax.
