Reward programmes that get you money back on fuel

As local motorists continue to bear the burden of the 120% hike in fuel prices over the past two years, many may be looking for new ways to save with each trip to the pump.

The good news is that there are several companies in South Africa that offer programmes that allow you to earn money back on fuel spent, and you might not even be aware that this is available to you.

How to get money back on fuel spent

There are multiple retailers and financial service providers in South Africa with rewards programmes that allow you to redeem earnings, usually in the form of loyalty points, at an associated petrol station for a portion of the money spent on fuel.

The first of these is Sasol, which lets motorists earn up to 30 points on every litre of fuel. This can then be redeemed against future fuel and in-store purchases at any Sasol convenience centre.

Likewise, Shell lets customers earn 15 cents on every litre of fuel bought with its V+ Rewards scheme, which can then be used to purchase selected items in-store when swiping with a V+ card.

Clicks, meanwhile, allows its customers to earn 1 ClubCard point on each litre of fuel bought, which equates to 10 cents and can be redeemed at Engen garages.

Dis-Chem then has a similar programme, giving drivers 10 benefit points for every litre, which can be spent in-store at any Total station.

South Africans shopping at Pick n Pay can also make use of their Smart Shopper cards, which lets users earn 10 points on each litre of fuel bought at BP which can then be used to pay for future fuel purchases.

Furthermore, Discovery Insurance members are able to earn points via Vitality Drive, where 1 point equals R1 cashback on fuel spent up to a cap of R800 per month.

Finally, the following banks provide reward plans which you can use to earn money back on fuel spent.
