Toyota has given its popular Hilux bakkie an athletic makeover with the new GR-Sport model, which boasts additional cosmetics and more power over the standard model.
The new double cab is currently available in South Africa in one specification with a starting price of R865,400.
Gazoo Racing
Befitting the GR designation, the new bakkie has been given an additional 15kW and 50Nm bringing its power up to a total of 165kW and 550Nm.
The 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel drivetrain is then paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with a limited-slip differential, which sends power down to the part-time four-wheel-drive system.
As a result, the 4×4 will average 8.0l/100km on a combined fuel cycle while its top speed is pegged at 175km/h.
The bakkie is further able to accommodate a load of 790kg in the rear tray and tow a maximum of 3,500kg, as well as wade through 700mm of water thanks to a ground clearance of 286mm.
Moving away from the powertrain, the GR-Sport features a number of new visual elements such as a set of 17-inch alloy wheels with taller profile tyres, GR stickers, a black grille with a GR-branded crossbar, one of four GR-specific paint jobs, and black mirror caps, door handles, and side steps.
Inside, the upholstery is now made from a combination of suede, cloth, and leather, the dashboard features a carbon fibre trim with red accents, and aluminium paddle shifters are found behind the leather multifunction steering wheel.
Additionally, the instrument cluster has a new look with red needles and metallic bezels, and the GR logo is plastered in various areas from the seats to the push-start button.
Finally, owners will be treated to an 8-inch infotainment unit with smartphone pairing, dual-zone climate control, hill assist, traction control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure alert, a rear-view camera, and adaptive cruise control.

This is how the sporty double cab compares to other similarly-priced alternatives that are currently on sale in South Africa.
